Build an App Install Video Ad Around One Useful Action

Write an app install creative using a real screen recording, a specific opening and a clear install close, with an original receipt-app example.

A useful action, visible result and accurate install invitation form the creative brief.

An app install video ad needs to make the reason for installing visible. Choose one action the app performs, record it clearly, and connect the result to a precise invitation. A montage of every feature often leaves the viewer with less understanding of what to do first.

This guide covers the creative asset. It does not set bids, choose audiences, predict acquisition costs or promise that a particular script will produce installs. Those decisions require campaign evidence beyond the video itself.

The worked example uses a fictional receipt-organizing app called Receipt Pocket. Its sample behavior is to capture a receipt, attach a project label and find it again. Use equivalent steps that your real app currently supports.

Choose an action worth showing from start to finish

Begin with a task someone can recognize without product training. “Find the receipt from last week’s client lunch” is clearer than “Manage expenses intelligently.” The specific task tells you which screens and transitions belong in the ad.

For Receipt Pocket, the sequence should show the initial receipt, the act of saving it under a project, and the saved item being found. If the app requires a confirmation step, retain it or explain the edit. Do not make a multi-step process appear automatic by cutting away every necessary action.

Use a demo account with non-sensitive information. The sample receipt can be a clearly staged prop. Avoid real payment details, names or addresses. Preparing clean source material is easier than discovering private information after the ad has already been exported.

Write the opening from the viewer’s situation

Three possible openings for the same fictional demonstration are:

  • “The receipt exists. Finding it is the problem.”
  • “Save the project name while the purchase is still fresh.”
  • “Your next expense search starts when you save the receipt.”

Each points toward the same action but emphasizes a different reason to care. Choose the one supported most clearly by the recording. The first opening needs a visible retrieval step. The second needs a clear project label. Do not promise an outcome that the rest of the ad never shows.

Keep the app’s name visible enough to connect the demonstrated behavior with the product. A compelling opening with an ambiguous product identity can produce a memorable video and an unclear next step.

Turn the recording brief into an exact script

Here is an original sequence for Receipt Pocket:

Part Visible action On-screen copy
Opening A staged receipt beside the phone “The receipt exists. Finding it is the problem.”
Capture The real app saves the receipt “Save it while you have it.”
Label A project label is added “Keep it with the right project.”
Retrieval The saved receipt opens from that project “Find it where you expect it.”
Close App name and a clean final screen “Install Receipt Pocket and organize your first receipt.”

This table is a production brief, not evidence that the fictional app exists. Replace every action with a recorded feature from your own released build. If the product cannot reliably perform the retrieval shown, choose another demonstration rather than covering the gap with animation.

For a more detailed sequence, use the product demo script guide. The install ad should borrow only the steps necessary to establish its one promised use.

Make the actual screen readable

Record the app at a size that leaves its important controls visible in the final crop. A full desktop screen shrunk into a vertical canvas usually makes the interface too small to inspect. Show the relevant region and preserve enough surrounding context to make the action credible.

Avoid covering the action with captions. If the user must see a project label being selected, place the explanatory text elsewhere. Check the placement preview because social interface elements can cover content near the edges. TikTok’s creative guidance specifically emphasizes vertical production and awareness of the interface’s safe space.

The mobile demo recording guide provides a practical shot-planning method. It is worth preparing the capture around the final format rather than repairing an unsuitable recording afterward.

Assemble the creative around genuine footage

Prolifik’s Video Hook & Demo format combines an opening with supplied product footage. Upload the actual demonstration; entering a URL does not record the app for you. Review the finished media to confirm that the sequence and claims still match.

Do not depend on the original recording’s narration in this format: its source audio is replaced by selected library music or silence. Put essential explanation into the visible script, or choose a production workflow that preserves the audio you need.

Choose music and other assets that are suitable for the intended advertising use. An asset used in an organic post should not automatically be assumed suitable for a paid placement. Keep the source and permissions with the finished file so the person setting up the campaign can check them.

Match the close to the actual destination

“Install” should lead to an available app listing for the relevant device. A waitlist, a browser-only product or a regionally unavailable app needs a different invitation. Check the destination and make sure the feature shown is available to the people who can reach it.

Ad systems have their own asset requirements. For example, Google’s App campaign documentation distinguishes video and store assets and describes supported video orientations. Check the current requirements for the placement you are using rather than treating one exported file as universally ready.

Watch the ad once without sound and identify the app, demonstrated action and next step. If any of those is unclear, revise the creative before handing it to the campaign owner. Keep the source recording and script together so future variants remain grounded in the same real behavior.
