Make an onboarding tip video for one activation step

Choose one action a new user needs to complete, show the prerequisite, and make the finished state visible.

A first-use tip should show what completed looks like.

Choose one action a new user needs to complete, show the prerequisite, and make the finished state visible. An onboarding tip should help someone move from a known starting point to a recognizable result. It should not become a compressed tour of every tab in the product.

Define the action with your product team. “Activation” is a business term; the viewer needs a concrete task such as creating a first project or saving a first draft. Do not claim that watching the tip causes activation or predicts retention. Those outcomes require separate evidence.

Start from the user's actual account state

Write down what exists before the action. The account might be empty, connected to a workspace, or awaiting administrator approval. A demonstration that begins with every prerequisite completed can confuse a new user who has not reached that screen yet.

Decide who the tip is for. A new member joining an existing team may need a different path from a founder creating the first workspace. If their paths diverge, target one clearly rather than combining both and hiding the difference.

Ask the product owner to confirm the earliest useful action. An internal milestone is not always a meaningful viewer task. The tip should help the person do something they came to the product to accomplish, not merely satisfy a tracking event.

Build a prerequisite, action and completion card

Card field What the writer must know
Starting state Screen and account condition before the tip
Prerequisite Required role, connection or prepared input
Action The specific behavior the user will perform
Completion state Visible evidence that this action succeeded
Missing-state help What to do if the needed control is absent
Current source Relevant instructions and checked date

Keep the completion state separate from the next task. Saving a draft is not the same as publishing it. Connecting an account is not the same as posting successfully. The narration and final frame should use the correct state name.

Use a fictional first-project example

Imagine an invented client-work app called Welcomegrid. Its onboarding tip concerns creating the first project. In this hypothetical flow, the user needs an existing workspace and permission to create projects.

The opening says: “In a workspace where you can create projects, start with one sample project.” The recording shows the Projects screen, the Create action and a fictional project name. The final shot shows that project in the list. A brief note explains that a missing Create control requires checking the role with the workspace owner.

The tip does not continue into adding every teammate, importing files or scheduling work. Those are later tasks. It also does not claim the viewer has completed onboarding simply because the project exists. The fictional example illustrates a bounded activation-step video, not a feature or success result for Prolifik.

Capture enough context to repeat the action

Record the current interface using safe test data. Show the menu or screen location before cropping tightly around a field. Keep the important control names readable. A new user cannot infer the screen from a close-up as easily as a colleague who uses the product every day.

Prolifik's Video Hook & Demo workflow can use your uploaded recording for the demonstration segment. The recording requirement matters: website-based brand extraction provides context but does not produce verified footage of the onboarding action.

Use the broader product demo script guide if you need scene planning. For narrow-screen visibility and overlay placement, consult the vertical video safe-zone guide. Do not cover the control or completion message with a caption describing it.

Give the viewer one instruction at a time

Match the spoken action to the visible action. A sentence about naming the project should play while the relevant field is visible. Do not narrate the next three clicks while the video still shows the first one.

Leave enough time for the viewer to recognize the completed state. You can cut irrelevant waiting, but retain the meaning of a required confirmation or save step. A recording should not imply that unsaved text already exists as a finished project.

Avoid a long founder introduction. The user needs to locate and perform the task. If you include brand language, keep it secondary to the instruction. Check captions for exact product labels and confirm that the final file still makes sense with sound off.

Test with a fresh starting state

Use a test account that matches the intended prerequisite, rather than an experienced colleague's already-configured account. Give the reviewer only the video and ask them to perform the task. Observe where they pause or ask for context.

If they cannot reach the first screen, revisit the prerequisite. If they complete the action but cannot tell it succeeded, revisit the ending. If they encounter a permission difference, make the condition explicit or target a different audience state.

Save the task card, source version and recording date alongside the export. Recheck after onboarding or interface changes. This is a content workflow; it does not claim Prolifik delivers in-app tours or automatically tracks your activation funnel. The finished tip earns its place by helping the intended user complete one accurate, bounded action.
