Engagement rate formula

Engagement rate is interactions divided by an audience measure, multiplied by 100. This tool counts likes, comments and shares. Instagram also includes saves when you enter them.

By views = interactions ÷ total views × 100
By followers = interactions ÷ (followers × posts) × 100

For one post with 500 likes, 30 comments, 20 shares and 10,000 views, the rate is 5.50%. Against 2,000 followers, the same post has a 27.50% follower-based rate. Both calculations are valid; they answer different questions.

Choose a denominator before comparing

Views count viewing events. Followers measure the account's existing audience, including people who may never see the post. Instagram reach counts accounts reached and is available in the Instagram calculator. Never compare a view-based rate with a follower-based benchmark.

For a set of posts, enter the combined interactions and combined views. For a follower-based average, enter the follower count and number of posts. This is an average per-post rate; it assumes the follower count stayed broadly stable.

Make the sample useful

Keep the platform, format, reporting window and interaction types consistent. A carousel's saves and a Short's shares represent different actions. Compare recent posts from your own account before drawing conclusions from broad industry averages.

Does this look up an account?

No. Copy the counts from your analytics or public post numbers. If a platform hides a count, leave that interaction at 0 and use the same scope in every comparison. The tool does not infer missing data.

Can engagement exceed 100%?

Yes. A person can like, comment and share, and a post can reach people who do not follow you. A follower-based rate above 100% is mathematically possible and is not proof of an error.
