Prepare a Long Recording for AI Clipping Before You Upload It

Give a long interview or demo clean source boundaries, usable audio, permission notes and an output brief before asking for short clips.

Keep the source, topic boundaries and permission notes beside every candidate.

Good clips start before the clip job. A long recording with several topics, unnamed speakers and inconsistent sound can still produce candidates, but the team will spend more time deciding what each candidate means and whether it can be used. Prepare the source, rights and brief first.

This article is about intake. The existing guide to finding clippable moments helps choose excerpts once a recording exists. Here the task is to make sure the recording is complete, attributable and safe to send to a clipping workflow.

Record the identity of the source

Imagine a fictional 42-minute product Q&A for a scheduling app called Taskbridge. The founder demonstrates a review queue, a customer asks about approvals and a support lead explains an exception. The recording lives in an internal video folder.

Before clipping, put a small source record beside the file:

Field Example intake value Why it matters
Recording owner Taskbridge product team Establishes who can authorize reuse.
Source location Approved internal file or supported URL Lets an editor return to the full context.
Recorded date and version The current app build at the event Flags screens that may have changed.
Speakers Founder, support lead, customer guest Keeps each statement attributed.
Permitted uses Owned social channels after guest review Prevents a private answer becoming an unapproved ad.
Restricted ranges Customer account shown near the midpoint Tells reviewers where to avoid or redact.

These are sample fields, not real Taskbridge records. Do not put private account details into the public article or the video brief. The source sheet can use an internal ID instead of a person's personal email.

If a recording was forwarded without permission or the guest's appearance rights are unclear, pause that source. A public link is not a license. A technically successful upload does not change the ownership of the material.

Listen to the file before assigning a clip job

Check that the complete file plays, the speech is audible and the camera or screen share carries the relevant product action. The first minute and the last minute are not enough. Sample the topic transitions and the sections the brief is likely to request.

For the Taskbridge Q&A, perhaps the support lead's explanation begins while a slide is on screen. A clip that starts there may be clear in audio but visually unhelpful. Record the later screen-share range where the exception is shown. If the app text is unreadable even in the original, the clipping workflow cannot create information that the capture never contained. Re-record the action or use a separate truthful visual treatment.

Listen for background music or a remote guest whose voice drops out. A transcript can misread a plan name or negate a phrase. Do not rely on a generated caption as the only record of what was said. Preserve the original audio for a human review.

Mark topic boundaries without preselecting every clip

You do not need to hand-edit the full source before AI clipping. A short boundary list is enough. The how-many-shorts guide helps set a realistic target before you choose candidates:

  1. Introduction and event context.
  2. Review-queue demonstration.
  3. Customer approval question.
  4. Support exception and its qualification.
  5. Closing next step.

Write the approximate start and end of each section using timecodes from the actual file. Add a note when a speaker changes or a screen share starts. This makes it possible to reject a candidate that joins two topics or removes the condition from an answer.

Do not turn the list into a command to extract five clips. One section may have no standalone moment. Another may contain two distinct questions. The output count should follow the source and the reader's need, not an arbitrary quota.

Send a brief that names the intended audience

A useful brief for the Q&A could be: “Find a complete explanation of how a team lead reviews a pending post. Keep the support lead's caveat about account roles. Prefer moments that show the real queue or can be paired with the current screen capture.”

That tells the reviewer what to preserve. “Find viral moments” does not. A high-energy interruption could be unusable if it ends before the answer or reveals a customer's private workspace.

Create separate briefs for separate audiences. A founder evaluating Taskbridge may care about the review workflow. An existing user may care about the permission exception. Combining both into a short with no context risks making the product look inconsistent.

Know what the clipping tool receives and returns

Prolifik Clipper accepts supported long-video links and private file uploads, then returns candidate vertical clips for review. Check current source support, minute allowance and job limits before submitting a large recording. The current product page describes source minutes as a separate measure from the number of returned candidates; do not infer a guaranteed output count from a 42-minute source.

Keep the job ID and source ID in the same intake record. When candidates arrive, inspect each one against the full Taskbridge recording. Confirm speaker attribution, sentence boundary, captions, crop and the actual screen. A completed job is not a publishing decision.

An external editor may still be needed for precise audio repair, replacement screen capture or a custom multi-source timeline. Do not claim that candidate extraction automatically makes those changes. The value of the intake sheet is that a person can decide what to approve and what to fix.

Close the loop on approved clips

For every accepted output, record the source range, the actual export file, the permitted destination and the reviewer. Keep rejected versions separated from approved files. If the original Q&A is later corrected, the team can find the affected clips without scanning every post again.

Before scheduling, watch the accepted clip alone. Ask what a viewer who never saw the 42-minute recording would believe. If the conclusion is stronger than the source supports, restore context or do not post it.

Send a source you can review

Prepare the recording and permissions, then inspect every returned candidate against the original.
